The People's Monarchist Party (PPM) of Madeira has criticized the increase in cost allowances approved for the Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Assembly of the Republic, labeling it an act of "cynicism". According to the party's statement, bill 999, unanimously approved on January 11, 2024, and enacted by the President, raised monthly allowances to €2,400 per MP, amounting to an annual cost of over €6.6 million for the state.
The PPM Madeira questions the justification that MPs serve the community, comparing them to other professions that also serve society. The party alleges that this "opportunism" and "exploitation of public funds" could be redirected to reduce taxes, such as on fuel, or to lower state expenditures. The party calls for the law's repeal, challenging MPs to lead by example in financial justice.
