Socialist councilor Rui Caetano has demanded explanations from the Funchal Municipal Chamber regarding the "unbearable" odors emanating from the Lazareto Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETAR). According to the PS party, the municipality itself admitted in writing that the daily removal of sludge is the direct cause of the bad smells, contradicting the notion of a modern facility.
Caetano criticized the Chamber's response, stating it proves the executive "lied and deceived residents," and that promises of environmental studies are a "diversionary tactic."
Furthermore, the PS denounced the "degraded and abandoned" state of the Nazaré Viewpoint, with loose stones and risks to visitors, and the "critical" situation of a building in Santo Amaro, used for drug consumption and trafficking, calling for urgent interventions at both locations.
