PS-M criticizes Regional Government after bonito seizure, calls for solutions for fishermen

PS-Madeira president, Célia Pessegueiro, criticized the Regional Government following the recent seizure of dried bonito for self-consumption by the Maritime Authority in Caniçal. She called for the creation of legal exceptions to safeguard both fishermen and the work of supervisory authorities.

The party advocates for a response that goes beyond the specific incident, aiming for future clarification and an end to the distrust surrounding maritime professionals. Pessegueiro stressed that the Regional Government has the power to resolve the issue by amending the law and creating its own regulations.

Among PS-M's priorities are the review of how fish for personal consumption is accounted for in fishing quotas and the creation of an exceptional regime for cultural practices, such as consuming dried bonito at the Piedade festivities, comparing it to the traditional pig slaughter for self-consumption.
