PS-M deputies marked World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th with a Motion of Acclaim in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira. The aim is to combat the stigma associated with psychological suffering, normalize seeking help, and recognize the work of mental health professionals.
Between 2015 and 2024, 228 deaths by suicide were registered in Madeira, averaging 23 per year, with the majority occurring in men. Deputy Marta Freitas highlighted the importance of this data and the need to understand the scope of mental health in the region.
PS-M reiterates the need for an epidemiological study on mental health, a proposal previously presented in 2025 and rejected by PSD and CDS. The deputy questions the rejection of the proposal, which is now reinforced by the Order of Portuguese Psychologists.
