PS-Madeira President Célia Pessegueiro today called for a continuous and integrated fire prevention strategy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Pessegueiro criticized the Regional Government's management, deeming it incapable of ensuring the maintenance of protection zones and resorting to piecemeal measures.
During a visit to the Funchal city firebreak, the socialist leader observed that a significant portion of this priority area is once again covered in vegetation. She criticized the lack of an effective and sustained silvopastoral policy over time, lamenting that the Regional Government responds to a serious problem with disjointed measures.
Pessegueiro highlighted that the intervention on the protection strip, initiated in 2018, has not been maintained, with half of its extent still uncleared. She criticized the excessive reliance on mechanical and aerial means, advocating for the importance of forest management and continuous cleaning, and reiterated the socialist proposal to enable transhumance and directed grazing.
