The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has asked the Regional Government to conduct and release a survey of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors, who are nearing retirement in the coming years. The aim is to anticipate recruitment needs and ensure the timely replacement of staff.
According to socialist leader Célia Pessegueiro, between 10 to 15% of doctors may retire within the next five years. The party argues that this planning is crucial, especially with the transition to the new hospital, to ensure the continuity of healthcare services in existing facilities.
PS-Madeira also highlighted the situation in health centers, where, according to the party, doctors retire without being replaced, affecting family doctor coverage. The proposal for a full dedication regime was also discussed, aiming to enhance the value and retention of doctors within the Regional Health Service.
