The president of PS-Madeira, Célia Pessegueiro, proposed that producer and artisan organizations apply for Geographical Indication status for the region's wickerwork, an EU measure to enhance product value.
During a visit to the ‘Art’Camacha’ festival, Pessegueiro highlighted that the sector, once emblematic of Madeira, particularly the village of Camacha, requires more support from the Regional Government for its revitalization. Geographical Indication could perfectly encompass wickerwork, which involves both raw material cultivation and artisanal production.
The socialist party also suggests measures such as direct support for producers and artisans, the creation of a dedicated supply chain for wicker, paid vocational training for generational renewal, and updating product design to blend tradition with contemporaneity. Pessegueiro believes that with these combined supports, the sector can grow again and ensure greater commercialization, emphasizing the quality and competitive prices of regional products.
