The Socialist Party's (PS) municipal deputy in Santa Cruz, António Alves, criticized the lack of an integrated municipal strategy for sports. His criticism emerged during the Municipal Assembly, where a Draft Municipal Regulation for the Attribution of Individual Sports Merit Awards was discussed.
Alves pointed out that the PS's proposal from February 2026, which advocated for a unified Municipal Sports Support Regulation, would have avoided the fragmented discussion of regulations. He questioned the Municipal Chamber's consistency in now creating multiple sports documents, when it previously argued that specific regulations could confuse services.
The socialist deputy advocated for the explicit inclusion of Adapted Sports and the recognition of merit in team sports. He proposed an increase in awards for Adapted Sports athletes to promote equal opportunities and questioned whether collective sports merit should also be recognized by the municipality.
