The Regional Government of Madeira has expressed sorrow over the passing of Celedónio de Abreu, a Madeiran residing in Australia.
For several decades, Celedónio de Abreu was noted for his work with the Madeiran and Portuguese community in that country, participating in cultural, musical, and religious initiatives, and defending Madeiran traditions and culture in the diaspora.
More recently, he dedicatedly chaired the Nossa Senhora do Monte Commission. His connection to the community also included 34 years in radio, promoting Portuguese language and traditions and strengthening emigrants' ties to their homeland. He received the Portuguese Citizen of the Year award in 2023 and a Commendation from the Regional Government of Madeira the same year.
The Regional Directorate for Communities and External Cooperation views his death as a keenly felt loss, highlighting the legacy of someone who dedicated a significant part of his life to serving the community and strengthening ties with Madeira. The Regional Government extended condolences to his family, friends, and the Madeiran community in Australia.
