The Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Machico celebrated its 497th anniversary in a ceremony attended by the Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Labour and Youth, Paula Margarido. The official highlighted the institution's "historical journey" and its ability to adapt over time while maintaining its original mission to "care for people, protect the most vulnerable, and affirm human dignity in every era".
Paula Margarido emphasized that the Regional Government views the Machico institution as an "indispensable strategic partner" in implementing social policies, owing to its wide range of services to the community. The institution plays an essential role in Machico and the wider Region, offering support for children, the elderly, rehabilitation, health, food aid, and assistance for vulnerable individuals.
The secretary noted the particular symbolism of the celebration coinciding with the Day of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, linking the event to values of solidarity and justice. The ceremony was attended by various civil, military, religious, and municipal entities, and featured the screening of an institutional video and the inauguration of two exhibitions.
