The Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, surprised some attendees at the Madeira Agricultural Fair by participating in the final animal auction.
Maciel placed a bid of 150 euros of his own money for a lamb, becoming the winning bidder. However, instead of taking the animal, he returned it to the Association of Sheep Farmers of the Poiso Mountains. The bid amount went to the association, allowing them to re-auction the lamb.
The secretary explained that the gesture was a way to recognize the association's work in maintaining livestock and protecting Madeira's mountains, also assuring the Regional Government's support for the farmers' activities.
