The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, highlighted the vital role of the Bar Association in protecting citizens' rights, freedoms, and legal guarantees. Speaking at the opening of the first Insular Advocacy Conference in Porto Santo, Albuquerque stressed that the Association's work is becoming increasingly crucial in complex times for the rule of law.
Albuquerque warned of authoritarian trends in modern politics, identifying the digital world as a primary arena for political confrontation. He noted that the online environment, where boundaries are often blurred, requires constant vigilance from institutions safeguarding the rule of law.
The President also expressed concern over historical revisionism and criticized the tendency to legislate in response to individual cases or media pressure, rather than broader legal principles. He further cautioned about the challenges posed by rapid advances in artificial intelligence.
