A fire broke out on Friday, September 18th, in a vacant building on Rua do Sabão, central Funchal, reigniting concerns about public safety and emergency vehicle response capabilities.
The blaze, which started in the upper section of a residential building in the Sé parish, involved 34 emergency personnel and 13 vehicles. While no difficulties reaching the scene were reported, the incident highlighted worries about emergency access in Funchal's narrow and often congested streets.
City councillors suggest the incident should prompt an examination of the city's preparedness for future emergencies, particularly as the Sustainable Urban Mobility Action Plan (PAMUS) is being developed. They argue the plan must address not only daily traffic but also the movement of civil protection and emergency vehicles, and are seeking data on vacant or dilapidated buildings within the municipality.
