An incident in Irkutsk, Siberia, has led to the isolation of at least 197 people following the death of a 28-year-old laboratory technician. The professional, identified as Darya Shipilova, reportedly accidentally broke a vial containing live bacteria while collecting samples.
She was hospitalized with severe pneumonia symptoms and died two days later. Authorities placed over a hundred individuals in hospital units, and the Shelekhov district hospital was quarantined as a precautionary measure. So far, identified contacts have shown no symptoms, and laboratory tests have been negative.
While initial reports suggested a possible case of pneumonic plague, the Russian agency Rospotrebnadzor later stated the woman died of "pneumonia of undetermined etiology," assuring that the epidemiological situation is stable and under control. Pneumonic plague is a severe form of the disease, transmissible between people and potentially fatal without prompt treatment.
