The Socialist Party (PS) of Santa Cruz has accused the Mayor, Elia Ascensão, of turning the extraordinary Municipal Assembly held on August 11th into a "political monologue." According to the PS, the mayor did not respond to questions posed by the opposition regarding an investigation into human resources tender procedures within the Municipality.
In a statement, the PS claimed to have presented "a concrete set of questions" about the investigation, political and administrative responsibilities, and measures to ensure transparency. The socialists allege that "none of these questions were answered," and that the mayor opted for a "narrative of political victimhood."
PS municipal deputy Leonilde Cassiano emphasized that the party respects the presumption of innocence and does not intend to usurp judicial authorities. However, the PS distinguishes between criminal and political responsibility, arguing that the latter should be scrutinized. The party questions the political appropriateness of the mayor continuing to intervene in human resources procedures while an investigation into the sector is ongoing.
