The Mayor of Santana Municipal Council, Dinarte Fernandes, visited the Madeiran emigrant community in the United Kingdom. During his stay, he met with the Consul General of Portugal in London, Ana e Brito Maneira.
According to Dinarte Fernandes, the diplomat showed openness to establishing contact with mayors. The aim is to address and resolve situations arising from Brexit, as well as other social issues affecting the Portuguese community. The Consul General, despite being in office for 10 months, demonstrated a deep understanding of the community's reality, particularly the Madeiran population. The increase in tuition fees for Portuguese students in England, a consequence of Brexit, was also discussed, with hopes for a resolution through the Erasmus program.
Fernandes was impressed by the daily number of appointments at the consulate, around 500. The mayor also attended the opening ceremony of the first Madeira Festival in Purley.
