Waste such as appliances, mattresses, and scrap metal is accumulating near the municipal warehouse in São Vicente. The Municipal Council has hired a company for a cleanup operation expected to cost around 20,000 euros, aiming to have the area cleared this month.
However, the origin of this waste accumulation has been questioned, with records of similar situations in previous years. A 2006 report already described scrap metal piling up in São Vicente, with resident complaints about odors and lack of response. At the time, the councilor responsible for the Environment deemed the situation temporary and promised a solution.
The issue resurfaced in 2009, with reports of an "open-air dump" and promises of cleanup that were fulfilled. In 2022, a proposal for an inter-municipal landfill emerged after illegal dumping in the area, leading to the installation of fencing and stricter surveillance.
