Pharmacy technicians at the Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (SESARAM) are in a state of "burnout" and "at their limit," warned Teresa Gonçalves from the National Union of Higher Technicians of Diagnosis and Therapeutics (STSS).
According to the union leader, 80% of professionals have signed responsibility waivers, and staff shortages are being compensated with overtime, including in the preparation of medication for hemato-oncology patients.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon resulting from unmanaged chronic workplace stress, characterized by exhaustion, mental detachment, and reduced professional efficacy.
