The Legislative Assembly of Madeira debated a motion of solidarity for Madeirans at risk of poverty and social exclusion, proposed by the PS and presented by MP Isabel Garcês. Garcês highlighted recent poverty figures on the island, stating that it should not be downplayed nor depend on the Regional Government's preferred indicators.
Lina Pereira (JPP) questioned the discrepancy between the region's positive economic indicators and the existence of poverty, arguing that wealth does not imply equitable distribution. Manuel Gonçalves (CH) labelled the proposal as hypocritical, assigning responsibility to the PS for the current situation and arguing that poverty is not solved by parliamentary documents.
Gonçalo Maia Camelo (IL) called for concrete solutions and less rhetoric, deeming the risk of poverty unacceptably high. Sara Madalena (CDS) quoted "res non verba" (action instead of words), while Bina Pereira (PSD) pointed out that recent indicators place Madeira in a better position than other European countries. Miguel Castro (unaffiliated MP) also joined in solidarity but advocated for more effective policies than mere votes to combat poverty and questioned the distribution of wealth produced in Madeira.
