A strong swell surprised bathers this afternoon at the Barreirinha Bathing Complex, with a wave surging up the pier and flooding the area where some people were standing.
The sudden advance of the sea left some bathers distressed, forcing them to flee to higher ground. The force of the wave also dragged some belongings left at the site into the sea.
At the time of the incident, the flag flying at the bathing complex was yellow, indicating the need for increased caution on the part of bathers.
