A collision between two vehicles, followed by a fire, occurred around 7 pm in a tunnel in Santa Cruz, Madeira Island.
The express lane in the Santa Cruz to Caniço direction was closed to traffic. Three people were seriously injured and taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition.
The Santa Cruz Fire Brigade mobilized two ambulances and three fire engines. The Red Cross was also present at the scene and assisted in transporting one of the victims. Witnesses reported seeing people fleeing on foot and cars making U-turns inside the tunnel.
