UN Adopts 2030 Agenda and 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015

On September 25, 2015, the 193 UN member states unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

On September 25, 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This historic milestone, which redefined global priorities, took place at the UN Summit on Sustainable Development in New York. The document "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" came into effect on January 1, 2016, setting a universal action plan to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and promote prosperity by 2030.

The date is commemorated in Portugal as the National Day of Sustainability, established by Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 56/2023. The 2030 Agenda comprises 17 Goals and 169 targets, balancing economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and succeeding the Millennium Development Goals.
