Vânia Jesus calls for a 100% renewable Porto Santo and fair access to Environment Fund

The MP pressed the Environment Minister on Porto Santo's renewable energy transition and on the region's access to national environmental funding.

During a hearing with the Minister of the Environment, held as part of the discussion of the 2027 State Budget, MP Vânia Jesus highlighted investments under way on Porto Santo to make the island fully renewable.

She asked the Minister how she assessed progress so far, building on the "Porto Santo Sustentável" project, and what guarantees existed that the investments would bring concrete benefits to residents and the local economy, such as lower electricity costs and electrified transport.

Jesus also criticised the Environment Fund's annual plan, which she said does not guarantee national coverage of its funding calls, limiting the region's access, and asked for fairer conditions. The Minister announced a visit to Porto Santo on 13 November, including a test running on renewables alone.
