Democrats take control of Senate and House in US midterm elections

Democrats win control of both chambers of Congress, a major setback for President Trump and the Republican Party.

In the 2026 US midterm elections, Democrats gained control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, a significant defeat for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Preliminary results show Democrats with at least 54 Senate seats, compared with roughly 41 to 44 for Republicans, depending on the source and the stage of the count. In the House, Democrats hold at least 225 to 228 seats, against a majority threshold of 218. Some races, notably in Alaska and Mississippi, still had no declared winner.

Notable wins include James Talarico in Texas, the first Democrat elected to the Senate from the state since 1988, and Adam Hamilton in Kansas, the first Democratic Senate win there since 1932. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the state's first Black woman governor.

The result gives Democrats the power to chair committees and shape the Republican legislative agenda. The count was not fully complete, but major projections pointed to a firm Democratic majority in Congress.
