A medal ceremony for international search and rescue teams marked the end of the survivor search cycle in Venezuela. The phase of hope gives way to confirmation, with the focus shifting to victim identification and providing answers to families.
Portugal's Ambassador, Frederico Silva, highlighted the "brilliant" performance of the Portuguese mission, reinforcing ties of friendship between the two nations. He emphasized Portugal's strong connection to Venezuela, stemming from emigration and an integrated Portuguese community.
Priorities now include the collection and identification of bodies to prevent a public health crisis and the assessment of approximately 50,000 buildings. Around 90 Portuguese nationals or those of Portuguese descent have been confirmed dead, a number expected to rise. Portugal pledges to support reconstruction efforts and affected families.
