Thirty patients who are medically fit to leave hospital, but still require appropriate accommodation or social care, are expected to be transferred from Madeira’s hospitals into private social solidarity institutions.
The measure aims to free up hospital beds for patients needing acute medical treatment and reduce the risk of further operations being cancelled due to bed shortages. Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque stressed that no one would be discharged without a suitable place to go.
This move follows a period of considerable pressure on Madeira's hospitals. On the evening of August 26th, 45 patients were reportedly waiting for an inpatient bed in the Emergency Department at Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, leading to temporary suspension of visits to awaiting patients.
