On August 7, 1972, the facilities of the Regional Transmitter Center of Portuguese Radio and Television (RTP) in Madeira were inaugurated, marking the start of regular television broadcasts in the archipelago.
The event was attended by the Secretaries of State for Information and Tourism and Public Works. The Secretary of State for Information and Tourism, César Moreira Baptista, highlighted the importance of television as a "relevant progress in the social communication structures" of Madeira, during a period of economic and social development for the island.
The facilities, located at the RTP Regional Transmitter Center studio and the Pico da Silva transmitter, enabled television signals to reach Madeiran homes.
