A survey conducted by the Municipality of Porto Santo involving 235 residents aged 65 and over indicated that 59% require home repairs.
The majority of the elderly surveyed maintain their independence, but nearly a third now need help with basic daily tasks.
The diagnosis highlights various vulnerabilities among the island's elderly population.
Other news includes a decrease in plant production at IFCN nurseries and the "deplorable" state of a wastewater treatment plant in São Vicente, for which the municipality is considering a half-million-euro investment.
