The Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity (APCOI) has launched a new portal challenging Madeira's municipal councils and parish councils to join the "Fruit Heroes" educational project. This initiative aims to promote healthy eating habits in schools, amidst a national context where one in three children are overweight or obese.
The program, which has already reached one million students, is now entering a new phase involving local authorities. Municipalities can formalize a partnership for free through a digital cooperation protocol, inviting schools, promoting the challenge, and monitoring registrations, which are open until October 31.
A pilot project in Ajuda, Lisbon, saw significantly higher participation from schools and children, with 87% trying new fruits or vegetables. APCOI urges municipal collaboration to expand the project's reach and combat childhood obesity in the region.
