Sleep Apnea: More Than Snoring, a Serious Health Condition

Sleep apnea, often starting with snoring, is a respiratory disorder with serious long-term health implications.

Sleep Apnea: More Than Snoring, a Serious Health Condition

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), which can begin with snoring, affects approximately 80% of those with the condition. This pathology, impacting 9% to 24% of the adult population, is linked to over 100,000 traffic accidents annually in Portugal due to driver drowsiness.

SAS is characterized by breathing cessation during sleep for over 10 seconds due to upper airway collapse. This prevents physical and mental rest, leading to daytime sleepiness, headaches, irritability, and in severe cases, intellectual decline and sexual impotence.

Improper nocturnal blood oxygenation can cause serious cardiac issues, including hypertension, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and hormonal changes. Diagnosis involves tests like polysomnography, and treatment may include surgery for snoring or addressing risk factors like excess weight.
