The new Scholarship Award Regulation has introduced changes to support displaced scholarship students, prioritizing university residences.
If they cannot secure a spot, students may receive an additional amount to cover the difference between the residence cost and private accommodation. For Funchal, this amount is 404 euros per month, while in Lisbon it can reach 500 euros.
However, recent real estate market data in Funchal indicates a median price of 16.8 euros per square meter in June 2026, which for a 50 m² property would result in a rent of approximately 840 euros. This is more than double the granted support.
Searches on property platforms suggest that even renting a room in the Madeiran capital can exceed 400 euros, requiring house sharing with two or more people. The situation in Lisbon is even more critical, with median prices making the 500 euro support insufficient.
