The Carmelite community in Funchal is celebrating 80 years of its presence and activity in Madeira this Friday, 6 November. The community arrived on 4 November 1946, and took possession on 6 November of the same year.
The celebration takes place at the Church of Carmo, a reference point for many Madeiran Christians who take part in the community's activities. According to a historical account, the Discalced Carmelites returned to the island after their forced expulsion in 1834, a process completed in January 1946.
The anniversary will be marked with a look back at the community's history on the island and with liturgies dedicated to these milestones.
