The Centre for Studies of Modern and Contemporary Archaeology (CEAM) is marking the closure of the ecoRoute project, dedicated to the sustainable valorization of the underwater cultural and natural heritage of Europe's ultra-peripheral regions. The event, taking place on October 16th, will present the results achieved over three years of collaboration with partners from Madeira, the Azores, Lisbon, Martinique, France, and Greece.
The project aimed to promote sustainable valorization of underwater heritage through innovation, environmental awareness, and sustainable tourism. In Madeira, training actions, environmental conservation, monitoring, and the development of digital tools were carried out. Plastic recycling machines acquired through the project will also be exhibited and transferred to FrenteMar Funchal, supporting the circular economy and the reduction of marine litter.
Co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), ecoRoute sought new approaches for the integrated management of underwater heritage, focusing on the shipwreck site of the Prompt vessel. Results include regional partnerships, heritage management and safeguarding tools, digital tools for sustainable tourism, and plastic processing equipment. Participation in the event is free and open to the public.
