The Chega party (CH) used the solemn session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira to advocate for autonomy to be returned to the citizens.
CH accused the regional political system of fostering clientelism, an excessive tax burden, and a disconnect between institutions and the population. Hugo Nunes, the regional leader of CH, stated that while the anniversary represents the Madeirans' right to decide their destiny, the parliament "seems increasingly distant from people's real lives."
The party rejected the notion that questioning autonomous institutions constitutes an attack on autonomy, arguing that "attacking autonomy is confusing it with the interests of a party or the survival of a Government." CH also called for strengthened oversight, greater transparency, and more effective action against clientelism and corruption, suggesting public funds be redirected to health, housing, and support for productive sectors.
