Chega Accuses Regional Government of Abandoning Madeira's Fishermen

Chega Member of Parliament Francisco Gomes has accused the Regional Government of abandoning Madeira's fishermen. According to Gomes, the fisheries sector is experiencing one of the most difficult periods in decades due to what he considers incompetent management and detrimental political choices.

Issues highlighted include reduced catch quotas, landing limits, the ban on tuna fishing in the Selvagens Islands, frequent equipment failures at fish markets and depots, a lack of fleet renewal, and alleged persecution of professionals who criticize the regional executive.

Gomes also criticized the organization of the first sale of fish, accusing the Regional Government of favoring private interests. He advocates for a profound change in sector management, stating that fisheries will only have a future with different policies and greater support for professionals.
