The CHEGA parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic has presented a draft resolution with measures to enhance the safety of women and other vulnerable users on public transport. The initiative aims to combat harassment, violence, and intimidation, proposing increased video surveillance and lighting, a national immediate reporting system, awareness campaigns, and the evaluation of reserved zones.
MP Francisco Gomes, parliamentary group coordinator on the Infrastructure, Housing, and Mobility Committee, linked the rise in insecurity to "the increase in immigration, especially Islamic immigration," stating that "the State cannot ignore that increased immigration has contributed to the growth of violence and harassment situations."
Gomes argues that border control and the protection of citizens are obligations of a civilized society, considering the proposal an important step to restore confidence in public transport as spaces of freedom and safety.
