Chega (CH) MP Francisco Gomes has criticized the governments of the Republic and Madeira for failing to present "real and feasible solutions" to the problems affecting the fishing sector. According to Gomes, current policy relies too heavily on subsidies and accepting European decisions, ignoring the specificities of traditional and artisanal Portuguese fishing.
"The Government of the Republic and the Regional Government continue to think that fishing problems are solved by distributing subsidies and bowing to Brussels. They have no strategy, they do not defend fishermen, and they accept rules made for a reality completely different from Portugal's," stated the parliamentarian.
Among the identified problems are catch quotas, the aging fleet, diesel prices, daily landing limitations, and inadequate infrastructure. Francisco Gomes advocates for a stronger Portuguese stance in international negotiations, with rules adapted to ultra-peripheral regions and traditional fishing.
