The president of Chega/Madeira, Hugo Nunes, has stated that the departure of Miguel Castro, former regional leader and now an independent deputy, does not weaken the party but rather strengthens it in Madeira.
Nunes asserted that Castro's decision "says more about Miguel Castro himself than about the party," accusing him of prioritizing personal interests over the party and following a "personal agenda." The Madeira leader dismissed Castro's claims about a lack of contact with national president André Ventura as "false."
Miguel Castro, who led the regional structure from 2022 to June 2026, cited a loss of political confidence from the new leadership. Chega now has two deputies in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, down from three.
