Civil Protection warns of bad weather in Madeira in coming days

Regional Civil Protection expects worsening weather on Madeira, with heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas, and issues safety advice.

The Regional Civil Protection Service expects weather conditions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira to deteriorate in the coming days. The forecast follows the approach of a frontal swell linked to a complex low-pressure system centred over the Azores, based on information from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

Showers, sometimes heavy with thunder, are expected from today on the south coast and in mountain areas, becoming heavier and more persistent on 7 and 8 November. Southerly to southwesterly winds are forecast to strengthen from Saturday, with gusts of up to 90 km/h on the coasts and 110 km/h in the highlands. Waves on the south coast could reach 4 metres on 8 and 9 November.

The authorities warn of falling branches and trees, slippery roads, urban flooding, overtopping along the seafront and collapsing retaining walls. Residents are advised to plan travel in advance, keep drains clear, secure loose structures, avoid wooded areas and degraded buildings, and respect posted access restrictions.
