Madeira is preparing for worsening weather in the coming days, with forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and rough seas. The warning was issued by the Regional Civil Protection Service based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
The deterioration is caused by a frontal system linked to a complex depression centred over the Azores, expected to affect the region until at least Monday, 9 November. Precipitation may be most intense over the weekend, on 7 and 8 November. Southerly and south-westerly winds could gust to 90 km/h on the north and south coasts and to 110 km/h in the highlands, while waves could reach four metres on the south coast.
Authorities warn of falling trees and branches, urban flooding, drainage problems, collapsing walls and embankments, and coastal flooding. The public is advised to avoid unnecessary travel, drive carefully at reduced speed, and follow official weather updates. Travellers planning weekend trips are urged to check their flight status.
