The CoastSnap Madeira initiative, which aims to monitor the island's coastline through citizen-submitted images, has surpassed the 500-photograph mark in just three months.
The project currently operates 11 monitoring stations across four municipalities in the Autonomous Region of Madeira: Machico (three), Porto Moniz (three), Funchal (one), Ponta do Sol (one), and Porto Santo (three). Participants can easily contribute by taking a photo at a fixed point and submitting it via a QR code.
These images are crucial for building a database to track coastal erosion, sediment plumes after heavy rainfall, and other effects of climate change. The project is part of the international CoastSnap network, active in over 20 countries.
