Independent Funchal Municipal Chamber councillor, Luís Filipe Santos, called for enhanced scrutiny within municipal social housing areas. His statement during the September 10th executive meeting addressed situations that might indicate a change in beneficiaries' economic status.
Santos argued it's unacceptable for families in need to await housing while the council potentially overlooks cases warranting review, citing the example of "arriving in a Mercedes to a social housing neighborhood and no one asking questions."
He clarified, however, that owning an expensive vehicle alone doesn't automatically disqualify someone. External signs of wealth should, in his view, trigger an economic assessment, necessitating periodic evaluations and effective oversight to ensure fairness and proper use of public resources.
