The Central Civil Court of Funchal has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Atalaia Living Care Association against Medialivre, the owner of Correio da Manhã, journalist Egídio Carreira, and three former officials of the institution.
The court ruled that a news report published by the newspaper in April 2024 did not attribute any wrongdoing to the association and that no concrete damage to its image or reputation was demonstrated.
Atalaia Living Care had claimed the publication conveyed an image of involvement in illicit practices and compromised its good name, seeking €100,000 in damages from the newspaper and €50,000 from each of the former officials.
The court found that the report resulted from an investigation and that the journalist acted in the line of duty to inform, absolving all defendants of the claims.
