Two specimens of Damara pine (Agathis robusta), trees native to Papua New Guinea introduced to Madeira in the 19th century, were felled within the grounds of São Lourenço Palace in Funchal.
The trees, which could reach between 30 to 50 meters in height, posed a falling risk to Avenida Arriaga due to insufficient root support, endangering the built heritage. Technical opinions favouring their removal were issued by entities such as the Forest Institute.
The felling was carried out as part of the palace's civil rehabilitation works, budgeted at approximately 2.3 million euros, focusing on roof repairs and structural issues. The operation was conducted safely.
