The Directorate-General of Health (DGS) has issued a set of recommendations for the public and employers to ensure the safe observation of the total solar eclipse.
The aim is to prevent eye injuries and reduce the risk of accidents associated with this astronomical phenomenon, which can impact health if not observed correctly. The DGS emphasizes that all potential consequences are avoidable with adequate prevention.
Guidelines include the exclusive use of certified solar eclipse glasses, compliant with ISO 12312-2 and bearing the CE mark. Regular sunglasses, X-rays, or smoked glass do not offer adequate protection. The DGS also advises special care with children and recommends prioritizing indirect observation methods, such as live broadcasts.
For employers, the DGS suggests informing workers about potential health effects and preventive measures, as well as adopting steps to reduce the risk of accidents related to distraction or visual impairments while driving. Direct exposure to the sun, even for a few seconds, can cause irreversible retinal damage.
