Residents of Fajã das Galinhas are still living in temporary accommodation two years after being evacuated due to the wildfire that raged across Madeira between August 14 and 26, 2024. Isalina dos Santos, one of the 120 displaced individuals, told the Lusa agency that "the situation remains the same," highlighting the lack of progress in the relocation process.
Although no homes were directly impacted by the fire, the village was evacuated because the flames surrounded it and made the sole access road impassable. The Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos provided temporary housing for the 33 families and funded the operation, which previously received a Social Action award. The municipality announced the construction of new homes in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, but the project, awarded in August 2025, is still underway.
According to the local authority, the first 32 dwellings are expected to be completed in 2027. The project, costing 8.2 million euros with support from the IDR, includes 18 T2, 10 T3, and four T4 units. Meanwhile, Fajã das Galinhas, now largely abandoned, is occasionally visited by former residents to tend to their homes and agricultural land.
