The Corpo Santo Chapel, located in Funchal's Old Town, hosts today the Feast in honour of Saint Peter Gonçalves Telmo. This saint, of Castilian origin, is considered the protector of boatmen, fishermen, and navigators.
The celebration, revived by the parish of Santa Maria Maior, includes a mass at 7:30 PM, presided over by the Bishop of Funchal, D. Nuno Brás, followed by a procession. Saint Peter Gonçalves Telmo is also known as Corpo Santo due to the devotion of sailors and his connection to the natural phenomenon of St. Elmo's fire.
