The Regional Government's strategy for the future of Madeira's wine production involves aging Madeira Wine to increase its market value.
Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, highlighted that wines with more years of aging have greater potential for appreciation, particularly in premium segments. He emphasized that the path forward is to "age more, bet more on quality, have wine with an increasingly higher final cost."
This focus aims to enhance regional production and ensure that the island, with its limited size, continues to produce grapes and assert Madeira Wine in markets with greater purchasing power. The Regional Government also intends to value the work of grape growers, supporting the Tinta Negra and Boal varietals with 255 euros per ton through POSEI.
This year's grape harvest officially began on August 24th, a week earlier than initially planned, due to climatic conditions that accelerated grape maturation. Production is forecast to exceed three thousand tons, approximately a 10% increase compared to 2025, with expectations of maintained or improved quality.
