The grape harvest in Madeira is being marked by a labor shortage, a persistent challenge for grape producers. João Figueira, a producer from Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, who expects to harvest around 20,000 kilograms of grapes, reports difficulty in finding available staff.
Figueira managed to gather about ten workers, including young people using their school holidays to earn money. Despite the challenges, the producer anticipates a better harvest than the previous year, with good quality grapes. However, he expresses concern about production costs, considering public support insufficient and suggesting wine houses should pay more for the raw material to ensure the future sustainability of the business.
The continuity of the activity is another worry, with Figueira admitting he has no successors to continue the family wine operation.
