MP Francisco Gomes, from CHEGA, accused the Regional Government of Madeira of ceasing to govern for the interests of Madeirans. According to Gomes, the executive led by Miguel Albuquerque now prioritizes maintaining power, protecting close economic interests, and preserving an established political class.
The parliamentarian believes Madeira is experiencing a profound degradation of trust in institutions, arguing that politicians should be rigorously scrutinized regarding their assets and income. Gomes highlighted the rising cost of living, lack of affordable housing, immigration, emigration of qualified youth, and over-reliance on tourism as concrete problems the executive is unable to solve.
Francisco Gomes also recalled unfulfilled promises regarding air mobility, maritime links, and social justice, accusing the government of preferring to politically combat alternatives rather than collaborate on solutions. He concluded that Madeira needs a swift change and that the current government has exhausted itself after years in power and failed promises.
